Overview of IsoBuster Portable
IsoBuster Portable is primarily focused on data recovery from optical media and other storage devices that may have suffered physical damage or logical corruption. Unlike many data recovery tools that rely on the operating system to access files, IsoBuster Portable communicates directly with the storage medium to read sectors and recover data. This approach allows it to bypass issues that might prevent the operating system from recognizing partitions or files.
Key Features
- Comprehensive Media Support: IsoBuster Portable supports a wide range of media types, including CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, USB flash drives, SD cards, hard drives (both HDDs and SSDs), Zip drives, Jaz drives, and even floppy disks. - File System Recognition: The software recognizes multiple file systems such as ISO9660, UDF (Universal Disk Format), HFS (Mac file system), NTFS (Windows file system), FAT (File Allocation Table), and more. This capability allows users to recover data from different operating systems and formats seamlessly.
- Advanced Recovery Techniques: IsoBuster Portable employs sophisticated algorithms to recover lost files. It can locate and extract files even when the file system is damaged or when the operating system cannot detect the media. The software can also identify partitions that are not visible to Windows.
- Surface Scanning: The surface scan feature checks for physical read errors on optical discs or other media. This function helps users identify areas of the disk that may be problematic and provides insights into the health of the storage device.
- Deleted File Recovery: IsoBuster Portable can recover deleted files by scanning the file system for remnants of lost data. It can quickly display deleted files on FAT file systems and other supported formats.
- Image File Creation: Users can create image files (such as ISO or BIN) from their optical discs or other media. This feature is useful for backing up data or creating exact copies of discs for archiving purposes.
- Checksum Verification: IsoBuster Portable can open checksum files (*.md5) and verify images against these checksums to ensure data integrity during recovery processes.
- Single Sector Extraction: For advanced users or engineers, IsoBuster Portable allows single sector extraction from optical media. This feature is useful for examining specific sectors in detail or recovering data from problematic areas.
- Multi-File Image Handling: The software supports multi-file image formats and can handle complex disc structures with ease.

Start up IsoBuster Portable, Insert a CD or DVD, select the drive (if not selected already) and let IsoBuster Portable mount the media. IsoBuster Portable immediately shows you all the tracks and sessions located on the media, combined with all file-systems that are present. This way you get easy access, just like explorer, to all the files and folders per file-system. Instead of being limited to one file-system that the OS picks for you, you have access to “the complete picture”. Access data from older sessions, access data that your OS (e.g. Windows) does not see or hides from you etc.
On top of this, IsoBuster Portable interprets image files, such as:
*.DAO (Duplicator)*.TAO (Duplicator)*.ISO (Nero, BlindRead, Creator)*.BIN (CDRWin)*.IMG (CloneCD)*.CCD (CloneCD)*.CIF (Creator)*.FCD (Uncompressed)*.NRG (Nero)*.GCD (Prassi)*.P01 (Toast)*.C2D (WinOnCD)*.CUE (CDRWin)*.CDI (DiscJuggler)*.CD (CD-i OptImage)*.GI (Prassi PrimoDVD)*.PXI (PlexTools)*.MDS (Alcohol)*.MDF (Alcohol)*.VC4 (Virtual CD)*.000 (Virtual CD)*.B5T (BlindWrite)*.B5I (BlindWrite)*.B6T (BlindWrite)*.B6I (BlindWrite)*.DMG (Apple Macintosh)*.DC42 (Apple Macintosh)*.IBP (IsoBuster Portable)*.IBQ (IsoBuster Portable)*.IBDAT (IsoBuster Portable)*.IBADR (IsoBuster Portable)*.NCD (NTI)*.FLP (Floppy image)*.E01 (Expert Witness Format)*.Ex01 (Expert Witness Format)*.S01 (Expert Witness Format)*.RMG (Rimage Disk Image)*.DSK (Generic Disk Image)*.IMAGE (Generic Disk Image)*.VMDK (virtual Machine Disk)*.UDF (UDF Image)*.DD*.XISO*.XBX*.VHD (Microsoft)*.VHDX (Microsoft)*.VDI (Oracle VM VirtualBox)*.WBFS (Wii)*.1Kn (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)*.2Kn (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)*.4Kn (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)*.8Kn (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)*.16Kn (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)*.32Kn (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)*.64Kn (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)*.512e (Generic Disk Image – IsoBuster Portable)
Changelog:
Changes / New:
- Digital Audio playback of CD Audio tracks (from image files as well as real CDs)
- Digital Audio playback [From-To] via Shift + right mouse-click on Audio tracks
- Display of a (CD, DVD, BD) disc in Properties with all the (known) unreadable sectors to get a feeling of the damage
- Preview (*) of a selection of picture files (via right mouse-click and in the Properties Window). Native support for: bmp, jpg, emf, wmf, ico, tiff and png. Built in Windows WIC support for: gif and whatever codecs are installed on your system
- Preview (*) of a selection of video files (via right mouse-click and in the Properties Window). Currently enabled for: mpg, mp4, wmv, avi, mov, vob, vro, m2ts and trp files. Playback is done via excellent LibVLC and works independently from possibly installed codecs. LibVLC is the engine of VLC. [NOT installed with IsoBuster]
(*) Use Preview ONLY on stable working media (or in image files). Not on failing media ! Preview involves a lot of reading by third party components (e.g. Windows, WIC, picture parsing code, video parsing libraries (including its plugins) etc. It is not wise to subject marginally readable media (for whatever reason) to possibly excessive reads. IsoBuster still does all the reading, and it applies various mechanisms to keep things in check, but it also has to surrender some of its control to be able to serve the needs of the preview functionality
Improvements:
- Show recordings that possibly couldn’t be found before on Panasonic DV Recorders (MEIHDFS v 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2) (for example DMR-EH55)
- Default to using the ANSI code page to interpret filenames on Pioneer DV Recorders (dynamically check for UTF8 as well)
- Improved imlst support by allowing quotes where possible
- Improved filename magic support in CUE files
- History navigation buttons are now disabled when starting up without a device selected
- Improved finding missing -VR recordings on DVD(-R/W)
- Plenty of other tweaks and improvements, lots of changes under the hood
Fixes:
- Fixed exception error while parsing recovered -VR on DVD(-R/W)
- Fixed an issue parsing filenames, in a FAT file system, with certain multi-byte character sets (e.g. Japanese)
- Fixed some regression in IsoBuster 5.5.0, in particular for discs (or image files) containing the High Sierra or CD-i file system (also fixed in 5.5.1)
- Fixed some regression in IsoBuster 5.5.0, in particular when generating XML reports in combination with special characters in file- and folder-names (also fixed in 5.5.2)
